This past Saturday, the LHS scholars bowl team spent the day competing at Washburn University in a competition called Quest, which will be aired on KTWU on Feb. 8. The team included Chelsea Fleming, Josh Agnew, seniors; Brandi Feehan, junior; and Tanner Myers, Matthew Parodi, sophomores. They competed against Lawrence Free State and the score will be released when the show airs.
While the competition is the same as most scholars bowl competitions, the atmosphere was very different. Rather than being at a high school, this competition was located at a college on a television set.
“It was a little nerve-racking,” Fleming said.
While it was nerve-racking, this year was the second for most of the participants on the team. Last year the team lost to Washburn Rural, who won the whole competition.
“I think we were more prepared this year because we knew what to expect,” Feehan said.
The scholars bowl season is not over yet. Both regional and state competitions are upcoming in the near future.
“I think we have really good chances, we have to place in the top three [to qualify],” Christine Staab, scholars bowl coach, said.
The students hope to qualify for nationals again in Washington, D.C., for the history bowl competition. They also have the possibility to compete at the science bowl as well.
