As the second quarter nears an end, so does the first half of the scholars bowl season. Throughout the program’s history, the Louisburg Scholars Bowl team has made a name for themselves. Most significantly, last year they earned third place at the state competition.

In the past couple of weeks, the team has continued with their tradition. They received third place at Eudora on Dec. 2 and fourth at De Soto High on Dec. 3. The team also traveled to Washburn University in Topeka to compete at Super Saturday on Dec. 7 to qualify for the televised QUEST competition. Louisburg competitors did better than ever before, but did not qualify for the televised event.

“I am satisfied [with the team’s performance],” Christine Staab, scholars bowl coach, said. “I feel like we know a lot of things, we just had some hard breaks…it was really close.”

Many students in scholars bowl regard it as a both fun and educational activity. In the past, the team has traveled as far as Washington D.C. for the National History Bee and Bowl.

“I think [scholars bowl] has helped with ability to attempt to recall facts I may or may not know quicker,” Brandon Randolph, senior, said.

For now, the team looks forward to their second semester competitions, including regionals and state.

“The varsity team has done exceptionally well this year. I think we have a great shot at state,” Brandi Feehan, senior, said. “I have been so lucky to be on a team with such talented students!”
